Imogen Holst ~ Toccata (A11) is an interesting perpetuum mobile-style piece. Relatively short, it requires a good sense of consistent rhythm through the interplay of quavers between the hands. It isn't particularly difficult, but the notes and patterns must be well known in order to focus on the shape and brilliance of sempre staccato e leggiero in performance. It is marked presto - something which would bring panâche to a distinction performance, though it can work at a slightly slower tempo when well phrased and technically secure.

T Rex

Sonny Chua ~ T-Rex Hungry (B1) is not a particularly nice piece, but then it's not meant to be. Assuming you are being chased by this terrifyingly huge beast for its next Sunday lunch, then you'll have judged the mood about right! The metronome indication is "feverishly fast", although it is just as important to be able to present a tautly rhythmic performance. The quaver flow should be constant, as it changes from the pounding regularity of the fours into the sudden 3s and 2s, as the pursuer gets even closer, and then to the 2s as it breathes down your neck. The point where you realise it's too late is reached rather 'wildly' and inevitably as he lets out a final, rather ungracious burp!

This is a piece with which to engage the wilder side of some pupils, for sure.

Tanaka ~ Northern Lights (C10) is a haunting piece that evokes a starry, impressionistic atmosphere. The performer needs to have confidence in frequent left hand crossing into the treble, then back to the bass, so good familiarity with the score is essential for a smooth flowing result. The delicacy of textures is also an important aspect to bear in mind in order to create the character with the finesse needed.

Carse ~ Csardas (B12) (piano duet) is a challenging piece but well worth it. The latter sections are quicker with some lively chord playing in the primo part. The musical challenge is in achieving the right sense of musical freedom, the natural push and pull of the rubato with the changes of tempo, along with good ensemble and transparent textures.
