Trees Heavy with Snow

Pieces which stir the imagination are so welcome. Alwyn ~ The Trees are Heavy with Snow (A5) is one such piece. Right and left hands stay more or less in the same hand position, yet the writing cleverly makes use of snippets of imitation and some right hand chord clusters which conjure the feel of frost in the air.

Gurlitt ~ The Chase (A6) is a good choice. It's pretty easy, with minimal left hand chord changes and bold dynamics throughout. It should be played at a confident one-in-a-bar tempo otherwise it will sound boring!

Gurlitt A6 The Chase

Handel ~ Gavotte (A7) is an appealing piece that should be fairly easy to learn. There are three repetitions of the main motif, and a third phrase between the hands in similar motion.

Elsie Wells ~ Courante (A10) (duet) is a delightful piece. The hands lie comfortably in a mainly fixed hand position and it is a great introduction to piano duet playing.

Hook ~ Gavotte in C (A12) requires confident coordination between the hands but there are no changes of hand position, so that helps to make this a fairly easy piece.

Florence B. Price ~ A Morning Sunbeam (B2) is a pleasant piece. Its length should not put you off, since it's an easy piece to learn due to the repetition of ideas. It needs to be played with a good one-in-a-bar feel and alternating right hand/left hand melodic projection.

Head ~ The Quiet Wood (B3) is a perfect opportunity to engage in some work on singing legato tone. The texture often comes across as a duet between the two hands, both complementing each other with their natural rise and fall through the phrases.

Grechaninov ~ Fairy Tale (B8) is a short descriptive piece. The musical aim should be to create a well-projected and expressive right hand line with a quiet left hand legato.

Duets are always a great idea. Helen Madden's ~ The Forgotten Forest (B9) is a good opportunity to take. The primo part is fairly easy and lies comfortably under the hands. It provides for a range of dynamics and its plaintive mood is appealing.

C list

Ghanaian

Traditional Ewe ~Tu tu Gbovi (C9) is a simple duet which is readily playable, yet at a quicker tempo than The Forgotten Forest from the B list.
