More Challenging
A list
Martinu's music is often rhythmically vibrant and exciting to play and listen to. Martinu ~ Allegretto (A2) is no exception. What makes this a more challenging piece is the syncopated rhythms, changes to 5/8, and brisk tempo. Whilst not fast as an Allegretto, it will become uncharacteristically dull if the speed is too slow.
Mozart ~ Gigue in G (A7) is a brief, bright and engaging piece of fugal writing. It must dance along at a suitably vibrant, dance-like tempo with careful articulation detail in order to delineate the textures with clarity and variety of articulation. This makes it a very worthwhile, if challenging, choice if it is not to plod along.
In Andras Schiff's brilliant treatment it glistens with a sharp, clean and incisive articulation:
Rameau ~ Les sauvages (A9) is an absolute delight in the hands of Grigory Sokolov:
His wonderfully virtuosic and stylish performances demonstrates the fine beauty of Rameau’s keyboard style when played to perfection on the piano rather than the harpsichord. For those with a good technique in finger repetition and a love of ornamentation, this would be a great choice.
